IN the greater number of cafes, chan- cres are no doubt at firft only local affections; not occafioned, as many have fuppofed, by the venereal virus firft ab- forbed and carried into the habit, and then thrown out again in this form, but merely by the inflammation and ulcera- tion arifing from particles of matter ap- plied to the membranous furface of the glans and prepuce. In this manner we often fee them produced in cafes of phy- mofis ; and this is my reafon for fpeaking of them in this work. Objections have been made to the cure of a chancre by topical applications, on a fuppofition, that if the ulcer is healed by fuch means, the virus will be carried into the
