    Slaughter Houses. These have been inspected three times during the past year, and so far as the buildings are concerned, cleanliness has been better maintained. i6 Notices, relating principally to cleaning and limewhiting, have been served on the owners and occupiers, and the defects have in every case received attention. Last year I called attention to the close proximity of these buildings to dwelling houses, and can only reiterate the warning then given. The owners and occupiers should, in my opinion, taking into consideration the privileges they enjoy, take especial pains to avoid any nuisance arising from either the cleanliness of the premises or the carrying on of business. Workshops and Factories Act, 1901. With these are included bakehouses, and with regard to these, two general inspections have been made during the year, and out of which 14 notices dealing with repairs and whitewashing have been served and have been attended to. With regard to the Factories and Workshops, inspections have been made, out of which 5 notices have been issued dealing with cleansing, general sanitary defects and want of water. 3 of these cases are abated and 2 still in hand. Food and Drugs Act. During the year under consideration 46 samples have been taken, viz: 18 of Milk, 10 of Lard, 8 of Butter, i of Margarine, 4 of Coffee, 4 of Cheese, i of Ice Cream. All these were submitted to the Borough Analyst and were pro- nounced to be genuine except one of Butter, but that was very slightly adulterated, certainly not sufficient to carry the case any further. Infectious Diseases (Notification) Act. In the year just passed there has been a wonderful increase in the number of Scarlet F'ever cases notified under the above Act. The character of the disease has been of an exceedingly mild type, and owing to this it is feared that many cases escaped observation entirely until too late to do any real good. It was principally confined to young children, for the records shew that about 80 per cent, of those attacked were under 13 years of age. With the records of the progress of the disease before me, 1 cannot allow this Report to go before you without once again drawing the Burgesses’ attention to the fact that
