Mr.Chairinan and Gentlerien, I have the honour to present ny Annual Report for the year ended December 31st,1963. The Registrar General* s estimate of the population at mid-year \iris unchanged at 8,ATO. Tlie population at the Census (I96I) was given as S,i+59# The Birth Rate shows a fall, Tlie number of live-births was 17A compared with I84 in 1962, There were 3 illegitimtc births, compared -tvith 13 in 1962 and 10 in I96I. There was 1 still birth, cojjpared with in I962, The Death Rate showed a fall. The total of deaths was 129 compared •vri-th II46 in 1962, TJith the ever increasing number of elderly persons in the population, a rise in the death rate must te expected in the future. Diseases of the heart and circulatory ^^tem accounted for 72 of 1iie deaths, and cancer for 18. There was a slight fall in ihe Infantile Death Rate. Six infants under' a year old died compared \d.th 7 in I962, 4 in I96I, 2 in i960 and 8 in 1959 • There were no deaths associated with childbirth. There was one death from Tuberculosis compared with none in 1962,onc in 196l,onc in 1959 and 3 in 1958. Pneumonia accounted for deaths, broncliitis for 7 snd influenza for 3» It vjill be seen from tlie reports upon samples, that the qualii^?- of the ViTater supply is satisfactory and the quantity is becoming more adequate. The total number of cases of infectious diseases notified totalled tl compared iri.th 56 in 1962,52 in 1961,203 in 1960,36 in 1959, tliere being fewer cases of measles. There was one case of Dysentery. Hiere were 10 new cases of Tuberculosis notified during the year. Modem methods of diagnosis and close co-operation betwoon the various authorities responsible for iiie health of the population bring many of the unsuspected cases to light. Most of the patients who go to Sanatoria quiclcly regain -their heal-fch, such has been the advance in methods of treatment. The Xray Units of The Ifclsh Regional Hospital Board,con-tinued to visit the dis-trict during -the year, B.C.G. vaccination against Tuberculosis is carried out in -blic Secondary Schools and at Chest Clinics, In conclusion, I wish to thanlc Uie Council as a whole, and your Officers for their assistance which was so readily given to me, throughout the year.
