    PREFACE. The work here offered to the public con- fifts of papers written at different times, but taking their rife from the following occafion. About eighteen years ago I was informed, that the Rev. Mr. Gay, then living, afferted the poffibility of deducing all our intellectual pleaiures and pains from affociation. This put me upon confidering the power of affoci- ation Mr. Gay published his fentiments on this matter, about the fame time, in a Differtation on the fundamental Principle of irtue, prefixed to Mr. Archdeacon Law’s Tran flat ion of Archbifhop King’s Origin of . F_rotn inquiring into' the power of affo- ciation I was led to examine both its con- equences, in refpect of morality and religion, an .rlts P yfical caufe. By degrees many dif- qmfitions foreign to the doctrine of affocia- ion or at lead not immediately connected with it, intermixed themfelves. I have here put together all my feparate papers on thefe ^ 2 fubjects.
