![of attempting to provide for the lunatics of several widely-extended provinces in a large central institution is very doubtful. Such an institution must ere long grow to an unwieldy size; the supervision of each pro- vince over its affairs and its inmates must be materially sacrificed, and, what is more, its distance from the greater part of the population it serves, and the difficulties of access to it, must lessen its usefulness in all ways. Auckland, Asylum, according to official returns, con- tained 39 patients in 1859, and 40 in 186]. The house was overcrowded. Employment was afforded to a por- tion only of the inmates ; amusements—games, books, and music—were provided. Restraint was not used, and seclusion but little resorted to. It was under the care of Dr. jVIcGauran, the Provincial Surgeon, who however was not resident. Otago.—The asylum at Dunedin is a temporory struc- ture, erected in 1863 for 30 patients, and overcrowded. Previously to its construction, lunatics were kept in the general hospital, or confined in the gaol. Wellington.—The provincial asylum is at Karori. It consists of a long wooden building, containing 13 bed- rooms, besides two sitting-rooms, kitchen, and servants' rooms. A small detached portion contains a padded and three single rooms for dirty cases. It has five acres of land attached. The medical man is non-resident, and visits only twice a week. Occupation in the garden is encouraged. Restraint is at times employed. Its population has reached 20 in number, but is usually about 12. No provision is made for religious services.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b21029969_0320.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
