![Natural and Social Conditions of the Area. PHYSICAL FEATURES AND GENERAL CHARACTER OF THE COUNTY. ^J'he Adniiiiistrative County luay l)e l)riefly described as consist iii«' of two comparatively level ])lains, one on the South-East aud the other ou the South-West, se})arated from eardi other hy a j)roloii«‘atiou South- wai-ds to the liumher of the elevated Xortheru ])ortiou. The name piveu to the Aortherii portion is the Wolds. tleolo” ically they are coiuposed of rdmlk with a coveriup' of soil, which in places is very thin. The chalk foiinatiou on tlie Eastern side of the Wolds forms the well-known Ihmipton and Elamhorongh Clift's. It continues in a Westeidv direction to Acklam and 1 Leavenino', and tlien (dianpes direction to the South to rtnudi the liumher at Eerrihv and Jlessle. The rdialk t formation has heiMi ])rovcd hy boring to i-each a de])th of 1,(){)(S feet. The highest poiiit on the AVolds and in the Count3^ is 808 feet on the old Roman road where it passes over the to}) of darrowhj' Hill. The tracts of land above referred to in the vSouth- East and South-ATst of the County are for the most jrart of a cla^'e^' and marslpv natui-e, hut well drained h}' artificial means. The County', excejjf for a distance of six miles on the A^ortli and eiglit miles ou the West, where it meets the JYortli and AVest Ridings respectiveh^, is entireh^ hounded h_v river and sea. The length from A^ortli to South is about 05 miles, from East to AVest about 40 miles, and the extreme length fi'om Kilnsea (Spurn Rointj to the TSorth-AA^estern corner is over 50 miles. The area of the Count^^ is 741,074 acres or 1,157 s([uare miles inclusive of inland water. This, liowe\^er, in the aggregate is a veiy small proportion. The area of the combined rural districts is 710',098 acres, and that of the I'rban Districts 40,975 acres. The density of the population in the County is .24 persons to the acre, oi‘ approximately one pei'son to four acres.
