Althongli the town has a good water supply, only l,dr)I out of a total of 4,111 closets are water closets. Privy middens niimher 1,(S(S(), and pan cdosets 880. A^o definite policy has yet heen adopted with regard to conversion with a view to the ultimate sole use of water ch)sets throughout the Borough. Since 1920, however, 448 i)rivies have heen converted to Avater closets. At the time of the last Survey Report, a considerable amount of si'wage and trade Avaste Avas permitted to discharge into the Beveilc}^ Beck, a small canal con- necting the toAvn Avith the RiA^er Hull, giAung rise to comi)laints of the nuisance caused thereby. These have noAV been obAuated by diAuu'ting the trade Avaste from the 'ihinnery dii'ect to the main seAver. The Pumping Station at the Disposal A\b)rks has also been reconstructed and additional ])umping machinei'y installed. The outfall into the River 11 nil has been taken to a point loAver doAAm stream, and Avell into the current. BniDiiXGTox. During the year 49 water closets lia.A'e been proAu’ded to houses other than iieAv ones, and 45 pail closets have been abolished. During the past five years 242 Avater closets haAm been proAuded, and 207 I)ail closets abolished. The l^rivate Act, 1904, does not permit the erection of sanitary coiiAmniences other than Avater closets in iieAv buildings. The number of houses Avith pail closets only is 481. All seAvage is discdiarged into the sea.
