![to the Asylum, they have themselves been enabled to judge of the manner in which the Contractor acting under Mr. Cubitt’s directions, has from time to time carried on the works, and how little they have interfered with the Esta¬ blishment, considering the nature and extent of those works, but having been resident] at the Asylum during the whole year, and seen the progress of the works day by day, I trust I may be permitted to repeat the humble opinion expressed in my Report of last year, that very great credit is due to Mr. Mansfield, for the very excellent arrangements he has from time to time made'for the conduct of his business, and to the foremen and workmen, numbering between 3 and 400, for the quiet and order which has always prevailed. I also wish to express to the Committee my deep sense of the kindness and consideration which I have always received from Mr. Cubitt, and the invariable attention he has paid to my suggestions. It is a great satisfaction to me to be enabled to state to the Committee that Mr. Cubitt has upon all occa¬ sions throughout the alterations—even, I may say, the most trifling, been good enough to ask my opinion before proceed¬ ing with them; considering that after eight years’ service it might naturally be expected that I should be able to offer some suggestions which would materially assist the future working of the Asylum. I feel that I have both officially and personally much cause to thank Mr. Cubitt for the attention he has given to my recommendations.
