Hypoxanthin, C.,HiN40, occurs in the tissues of the spleen and muscles, and has been noticed in the urine of leukaemia ; when oxidised it forms xanthin. Lactic acid, CgHgOg, is the acid formed during lactic fermentation, and is found in sour milk and in the alimentary canal. Sarco-ladic acid has the same % composition as lactic, ba*^ differs from it in the solu- bility and crystalline form of its zinc and calcium salts. It is found in the muscles, and can be obtained from muscle-extract. Indican, CgH7NS04 is a substance derived from indol, the basis of indigo, formed in the intestine as a product of digestion; it is present in variable quan- tities in the urine; when treated with an equal quantity
