    CHAPTER m. WOUNDS OP NERVE CENTEES. All the cases of wounds of the head which have reached us have heen at a late date. In every in- stance they have been sent to our wards on account of epilepsy, chorea, or insanity—the consequence of the original injury. Their histories will be given in connection y^th the general subject of Epilepsy; and to the paper, by us, bearing this title, we beg to refer th^ reader. The spinal injuries have been either wounds of the spine—concussion of that chain of nerve cen- tres—or blows upon the lumbar or dorsal vertebra. The first and second classes of spinal lesions we shall cpnsider here as fully as our limited means will enable us to do. The third class is altogether peculiar in its nature. Of late, especially, malingerers have shammed dis- eases of the back to such an extent that back cases in general are a matter of utter disgust to hospital surgeons. Among the numbers thus fa- miliarly classed together are the real spinal con- gestions, etc. from blows, fevers, etc.; cases of neu- ralgia, rheumatic afiections, kidney diseases, lumbar pains from strains, piles, and diseases of malassim- ilation, such as the so-called oxaluric diathesis.
