The vibrator must be kept well polished and thoroughly free from oxidation, for starts and jerks in the vibratory movement are often un- pleasant and sometimes harmful. In the primary coil the patient is placed in what is called a shunt circuit, permitting only an infinitesimal amount of current to traverse the tissues when the spring is in contact, the re- sistance of the coil being many ohms less than that of the body of the patient. It will be seen that all the circuit takes the short road through the cell instead of through the patient.
