![might witli advantage, be invited in securing its discontinu- ance, by displaying noticeis urging customers not to handle meat before purchase. To ascertain the extent to which the new Begulations had been met, the Sanitary Ins])ector made a special inves- tigation of, and report on, the whole of the meat retailer’s’ shops and slaughter-houses in the district. There were six- teen retail meat shops and seven slaughter-houses. At the meat shops it was found that the Regulations were being fully complied with in every detail, with the exception that in some cases satisfactory arrangements were not made for the proper storage of trimmings and rmbbish. These defects were pointed out and promptly remedied, and the shops can now be described as having reached a high standard of cleanliness and good management. No meat of an unsound nature has been found, and no complaints in this respert have been received from the public. About 1^ cwts. of unmjarketable pork and bacon were, however, surrendered after inspection. The number of slaughter-houses con- tinues to diminish, there now being six, of which only five are in use, against ten in 1914. A detailed inspection of the slaughter-houses revealed several contra- ventions of the new Regulations, and active steps were taken to have these remedied. One .slaughter-house was found to be neither registered nor licensed, and another, on account of its dilapidated condition was promptly closed. Manufactining of food was found to be taking place in two slaughter-houses, and this has now been prohibited. With the exception of the local Co-operative Society’s premises there is no extensive -slaughtering taking place at any of the slaughter-houses in the district. The prevailing custom of the butc-hers is to buy meat direct from the Manchester Abattoirs in -such (juantities as the state of trade demands.
