![]921-192ii there oeciirred 321 cases. The continued preva- lence of tlie disease can be mainly attributed to infection from O'verlooked cases consequent upon the mildness of the disease, wdiich considerably increases the difficulties of control. Diphtheria was also unusually i)revaleiit during the year, 1/) cases being reported, which is the largest n\imber of cases in one year since 1912. This is a dangerous infectious disease, and I would advise the public that all cases of sore throat, ])articularly in children, should be immediately seen by a doctor. One day’s delay in ihe early stages cf Diyhtheria may mean deatb to the patient. Two minor outbreaks of Smallpox occurred during the year. Tliere were three eases in the first outbreak which occurred in April, and two cases in June. Tlie source of infection in the first outbreak was never definitely estaib- lished, but the second was directly traceable from East Kirby, Nottingham. The patients were instantly removed to the isolation hospital, the premises disinfected, contacts supervised, and all necessary precautions and action taken by the Public Health staff. In consequence of the inadequacy of the ordinary staff to deal with outbreaks of this description, and to ]ue&erve co-ordination between this and other neighbouring districts who were similarly invaded with the disease, very considerable assistance was rendered by the Lancashire County Council Public Health Depart- ment, to whom I tender my thanks for their valuable services. Tlie cost of the two outbreaks to the district fund was approximately £215. Chicken-pox was made notifiable from April 18th, 1925 to April 18th, 1926, and 188 notifications of this disease were received during the year under review.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b29170540_0041.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
