    all the other emetics2? Thefe are quef- tions which experience alone can decide. However this may be, it is certain, that the cure of a difeafe fo rapid in its pro- grefs, and fo fatal in its effects, as that in the Hotel-Dieu; which left fo little time for refle&ion, and fo little hope to the Y There feems but little probability that an emetic would have the fame good effeft in the commencement of the inflammatory Puerperal Fever, as it has in the putrid ; if given to excite confiderable vomiting, I fhould expert it would rather do mifchiet. Small dofes of Tar- tar Emetic given at proper intervals, and, in the inter- mediate hours the faline draughts of Riverius, together with the antiphlogiflic regimen, fomentations, emollient cataplafms, and cooling clyflers, have been attended with the greateft fuccefs in thefe cafes. * Some have preferred Tartar Emetic as afting more quickly than Ipecacuanha; but the latter feems mod preferable, unlefs the Tartar Emetic could always be pre- pared of one uniform degree of ftrength. It is, however, juftly obferved, that thefe are queftions on which expe- rience alone can decide with certainty.
