    ON BLINDNESS. The causes of blindness may be divided into those affecting the eyes proper and those affect- ing the appendages of the eyes, as lids and lashes. The first class of causes may, again, be subdivided into those affecting the refracting media and those affecting the sensory portion. The first division -will thus include the cornea, lens, conjunctiva, iris, vitreous humor, and retina. The second division, the eyelids, eye- lashes, and, more remotely, the lachrymal ap- paratus. The subdivision is obvious and con- tains the commonest causes of blindness in it. I will now enumerate these causes of loss of sight in order, commencing with the causes in the first division.
