In England and Wales, less 100 large towns, the rate was 145. The rate for 1898 indicates that more than one-ninth of the children born do not survive the first year of life. In Fixby the infantile death-rate reaches the very high figure of 308. In Hartshead the rate is 210 ; in Clifton 172, and in Norwood Green and Coley it is 150. VI.—Other Diseases. Of the other causes of death, senile decay and cancer are the most important. Nine deaths were due to the former and six to the latter. INFECTIOUS DISEASES. There have been 53 notifications of infectious disease during the year as compared with 72 in 1897 and 86 in 1896.
