HO W weak and Imperfe<3: foever this Performance may appear| however unoratorial my Expreffion, however languidly I may have con¬ veyed the Idea of the ingenious Au¬ thor ; yet, as I believed I underftood the French Language pretty tolerably, fo I fhould have thought myfelf to blame, if {^as I have a good deal of Leifure) I had not fet about this little Talk. I can and do plead the fame Reafon for tranflating it, as the much more learned Author Dr. Chomel did for publilhing it at all; that is, that I thought it my Duty, and for the Pub- lick Good; and I hope this Inten¬ tion will make it acceptable to thofe, who cannot read it in its original Beauty. The little notarial Scholia I have here and there made upon it, as I went along.
