TRiSNrTRAs, L. 1836; Subnitkas, Dub.] Nitrate, or Subnitrate of Bismuth, is tonic and antispas- modic, with a special efficacy in painful affections of the stomach; as gastralgia, cardialgia, and pyrosis. It has also been recommended in the diarrhoea of typhus fever and con- sumption. In too large doses, as two drachms, it has acted as an irritant poison; but by some these occasional poisonous effects are attributed to the presence of arsenic, which it is apt to contain, unless the purified metal is used in its manu- facture. M. Montserrat gives it to the amount of 2,] drachms in 24 hours without any ill effect. The usual dose is from 3 to 10 grains, twice or thrice a day, after meals. 799 Ijt Bismuthi Nitratis, gr. v.
