![(b) Discretionary Inprovenent G-rants« 1'he Council encouraged the submission of applications for improvement gr.nnts as in past years. G-rants amounting to £8,154- were approved in respect of 23 dv;ellings. Since the inception of improvement grants in 1949 the Council ha,ve authorised grants amounting to £54>393 Ir. respect of 2l4 dwellings. (c) Standard Improvement G-rants. These grants were introduced in June i 959 and already by the end of the year the Councid. had authorised the making of stand;.ard improvement grants in respect of 34 dv/ellings, amounting to £4,665. During 1 960 a further 50 grants were approved bringing the total standard grants approved to 84. Assistance to bring dw^ellings up to modem standards has therefore been authorised in a total of 298 cases which represents 11^ of the total private houses in the Rural Districto Loans. The Council approved loans under the provisions of the Sma].l Dwellings Acquisition Act and the Housing Act to enable persons to purchase Louses for their own occupation. Loans wrere also advanced to enable dwellings to be im- proved and repaired. Loans were authorised in a total of 9 cases (AldJiam 1 ; Brettenham 1 : Kersey 1 : Lavenhara 3i Milden 1 : Pol stead 1 ; Vfliatfield l). (®) Sub si di es.
