As a proof how much its advantages are prized hy tlie ])oor, each season produces an aug- mented list of applications; hut hitherto, such has been the situation of the Directors in reirard to finances, that, on account of very limited resources, their benevolence in its operations has been invaria- bly and unavoidably and most reluctantly circum- scribed. Their zeal has been checked by their prudence: although, indeed, they have occasion- ally done more than an average of their revenues might have been thought to warrant. In ardent hopes of continued and increased patronage for such a noble Institution, however, they have per- severed, and not without success ; for, from the kind exertions of friends, an accession to the List of Governors has been made during the last year.
