    the hair-tube continuing to exude, forms a small cup around the hair, the concavity of the cup being directed outwards, and its convexity being attached to the mouth of the hair-tube. It generally happens that a number of these sulphur-yellow cups, pro¬ duced upon a small circular patch of skin, form a cluster; this arrangement constitutes the clustered variety of the disease in question. At other times, they are distributed singly over the scalp, and con¬ stitute the scattered variety. When they exist in the clustered form, they have somewhat the appearance of a piece of honeycomb embedded in the hair, and from this resemblance have received the name “favus,” which literally means “ the honeycomb.” The dis¬ order is, in reality, “ the true ringworm,” the most serious form of disease of the scalp, and highly con¬ tagious. As the disease is deeply seated in the hair- tubes, and continues to progress in them, the irrita¬ tion and itching receive no relief from the escape of the matter in the formation of the cups, but, on the contrary, seem to increase, and in attempts made to relieve the itching, the hair comes away with the crusts. Indeed, if the hairs be gently drawn by a pair of tweezers, they will all be found loose and ready to come out on the most moderate traction, and in this way we are often able to detect the ex-
