PAyt of the enjuing Difcourfe about Li^t was written at the defire of fome Gentlemen of the Royal Society, in the Tear and then fent to their Secretary, and read at their Meetings, and the reft was added about Twelve Tears after to complete the Theory; except the Third Book, and the laft Propqfition of the Second, which were Jince put. together out of fcattered Papers. To avoid being engaged in Difputes about thefe Matters, I have hitherto delayed the Printing, and fhould ftiJl have de¬ layed it, had not the importunity of Friends prevailed upon me. If any other Papers writ on this SubjeH are got out of my Hands they are imperfe&, and were perhaps written before I had tried all the Experiments here fet down, and fully fatisfiedmy felf about the Laws of Ref rations and Cmnpofition of Colours. I have here Publifhed what I think proper to come abroad, wijhing that it may not be Tranftated into another Language without my Confent. The Crowns of Colours, which fometimes appear about the Sun and Moon, I have endeavoured to give an Ac¬ count of; but for want of fufficient Obfervations leave that Matter to be further examined. The Subject of the Third Book I have alfo left imperfect, not having tried all the Expe-
