With regard to diseases of the respiratory system also there can be little doubt that a very large proportion was due to infective forms of broncho- pneumonia. Further it will be seen that the enormous excess in the death-rate in childhood is due almost entirely to its excess in children under five years. In the other two quinquenniads of childhood the death- rate is below the average, with the single exception of the rate from acute specific diseases at the age- period five to ten. The classes of disease the death- rate from which in childhood is lower than the average at all ages are, in fact, few. The most important are :— Urinary system ...
