    xiv tizens of the world : they fhould be ten- der of the reputation of one another ; and they {hould warmly endeavour to diffufe the bleffings of the art through the whole habitable globe, If thefe reafons of an individual were confidered infufficient for quitting the common beaten track of medicine, there are others dill more cogent. Within thefe lad thirty years a fpirit of inquiry has proved the principal doc- trines of many celebrated modern authors fallacious ; a multitude of difcoveries in anatomy, phyfiology, pathology, practical medicine, chemidry, pneumatics, &c., have laid the foundation for a thorough re- vifion and reformation of the whole art of medicine. Thofe who have reaped the greated benefit from the new philofophy and medical improvements will be bed ena- bled to judge of the truth of thefe afler- tions : thofe who have mod; negledted them, on fuppof ng the art fufficiently per- fect, are unlikely to avail themfelves of any difcoveries, however important. The late . and prefent fatality of the diforder urged the necdlity of the per- formance ;
