Time course of catalase activity in maize scutella (C) and the effect of 10^ M abscisic acid (ABA) in perturbing the catalase activity developmental program. SD is based on three replicates in four independent experiments. Increase in CAT activity in response to ABA is due to de novo synthesis of CAT-2 protein. Fig. 9. Zymograms of the allelic catalase isozymes CAT-IF and CAT-IS as expressed in different tissues of the maize kernel. The scutellum is a diploid tissue; the homozygous parents exhibit only the FF or SS phenotype. The Fi heterozygote has the parental catalases plus three intermediate mobility hybrid isozymes in the proportions expected for a diploid tissue and a tetrameric enzyme (1/2 + 1/2)'^. The endosperm is a triploid tissue and exhibits the expected gene dosage for the tetrameric catalases in reciprocal F, progeny (1/3 + 2/3)'^. The pericarp is the ovary wall and is strictly maternally derived; therefore, no hybrid isozymes are generated as the paternal contribution is not present. As expected, CAT-3 is detectable in the pericaф (see also, Scandalios et al [1980b]). Migration is anodal.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b18019742_0034.JP2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
