About this work

Description

A Narrative of some of the transactions of the Surveyor's Department, which served with the Army in the Peninsula under the command of the Duke of Wellington. With anecdotes relative to the conduct of the Medical Department of the Army. The writer, who was a Clerk in the Surveyor's Department, gives a vivid account of the extraordinary corruption, inefficiency, and mismanagement of the Medical Department of the Army. A note at the head of the t.p. states: 'This narrative was written in 1816. It was commenced about 10 April'. At the end of the preface, however, is another note: 'The copy of this preface which Sherreff made, came to my hands 30 November 1818'. The actual period dealt with in the text is from May, 1812 to 22 May, 1817.
