    Pearson has allowed me to present to the readers of this book the splendid portrait which appears on page 58. In the little verse on page 16 the “file” which Robert Recorde was writing about was “geometric.” Such a “fresshe fine witte” as that old worthy’s, however, would perceive and enjoy, I am sure, the peculiar aptness of the application of his lines to biometry today.
