![weigh the infant once a week during the first year, and once a month in the second and third, and so on. Such records are of special value in schools and public institutions. Weight charts may be employed. An infant loses weight in the first three days of life, but recovers the birth-weight by the end of the first week. The average loss is from 5^ to 7 oz. A child should double its birth-weight in five months, and treble it in twelve. But hand-fed babies do not gain so rapidly. During the second year the average child gains about 5 lb., and for the next six years the gain is about 4 lb. a year.
