During this period all the major items of repair and maintenance on the remaining refuse vehicles were carried out, Mr, B, Goldstraw, the Poreman/Mechanic end the staff of the Council's Maintenance Depot have given of their best and the time lost through vehicle breakdowns was, therefore, greatly reduced. Refuse Collection and Disposal Staff Come rain, hail or snow and Bank Holidays, the ratepayers e3q)ect their bins to be emptied at least once in every week. This is a standard the refuse collection teams have endeavoured to maintain but on the odd occasion the system has for one reason or another failed to function. Every endeavour was made to rectify mistakes as soon as possible after a justifiable complaint had been received in the Department, A majority of the refuse collection and disposal employees have been with the Corporation a sufficient length of time to enable them to claim the full entitlement of annual holiday and this has meant a re-adjustment of working from time to time, Mr, L, Wood, the Poreman/Tip Attendant has allocated the duties and arranged the holiday in an efficient manner and has satisfactorily smoothed out the duty rota when owing to sickness or holiday replacements were not alv/ays available. The vehicle drivers were again entered in the National Safe Driving Competitions and three drivers received awards. During the year an application was received from the District Organiser of the National Union of General and Municipal Works for the Council to introduce an incentive bonus scheme for refuse collectors. After considering the proposals the Council decided not to introduce a bonus scheme but to review the position and consider what action should be taken as an when circumstances arise necessitating the refuse collection staff undertaking extra work.
