Έν ηπατι του αϊματος ή γέννα, καϊ ες το παν ένθεν η τούδε άφεσις.1 καϊ το ξΰμπαν ήπαρ όκοϊον αίματος πάγος, οξΰταται ων αϊ τηδε φΧεγμοναί. εγκέεται yap τω γωρίω τωδε η τροφή, ην μεν ετέρωθί πη φΧε<γμονή συστη, ου κάρτα γίγνεται οξέη' ζέει yap η του αίματος επιρροή.2 επί 2 I here adopt the ingenious con- jecture of Eimerins, in place of the common reading, εχειν ψδε. 1 This reading, instead of the common one, rov άφεχή, was first suggested by Petit. 2 The common reading is νέει, which Ermerins makes vb], having adopted it from Bernard, ad Non- num, i. p. 52. It occurs also in Cod. Harley. But neither the one nor the other furnishes any meaning suitable to the place. To my mind, there can be no doubt that the pro- per reading is ζέει, which occurs in Alexander's description of inflam- mation of the liver, as follows:— Οτι μεν ώσπερ ΐιπασα φλεγμονή εκ ζεοντος αίματος έχει την γενεσιν, οϋτω και ή εν τψ ηπατι, κ.τ.Χ. (vi. 19). The meaning, then, obviously is, that in inflammations of other
