![ing Officer, the Surgeon shall attest the signature of the recruit to the following preliminary certificate, {form Q,) which shall be retained at the recruiting office. Certificate of physical examinatioH. U. S. 186 . I. , on presenting myself to be entered as , at IT. S. , do hereby certify: 1st. That I am not subject to fits. 2d. That I have no disease that I know of, presently concealed or likely to be inherited. 3d. That I am not suffering from the consequences of any former disease or hurt. 4th. That I have no stricture or internal piles. 5th. That I know of no reason why I should not be passed; and, finally, that I do not, by this act, acquire or confirm any claims to pension. 4. Inspection of After signing the certificate, the applicant shall be sent to the Inspection recruits. room, and be required to strip himself, when the surgeon shall proceed with the examination, making notes in the following order: Mode of in- [«] HEIGHT. [6] ChEST MEASURE, [c] GENERAL DEVELOPMENT, [d] spection. Intelligence, [e] Head and face, viz: 1. Condition of cranium, as to malformation or former injuries ; 2. Motions of the head; 3. Motions of lower jaw; 4. Hearing and external ears; 5. Eyesight, Eyelids, 8fc.; 6. Nose, par ticularly for ozmna; 7. Tongue, Teeth, Fauces, Sfc. [/] Glands op the neck. [^] Abdomen and groins, according to the following orders: Put the hands back to back, above the head. Cough, l_umbilicus.^ Cough again, \_inguinal rings and groins, and abdom.en generally.'\ [A] Private PARTS, as follows : With back turned towards the Surgeon, stretch the feet wide apart; stiffen the knees, and bend the body forward till the fingers touch the floor, thus exhibiting the anus and perinseum for observation of hsemorrhoids or fistula, and affording a back view of the scrotum ; this position also favors exploration of the spine. Now let the applicant stand up again, and look for hydrocele, extensive varicocele, great inequality in size or absence of testes, as well as other abnormal or diseased conditions, [i] Spine and joints, according to the following orders: Whirl the arms round at full length ; extend them at right angles to the body, and, fi'om that position, touch the shoulders with the fingers; put the backs of the hands together above the head; bend and extend the fore-arms, and rotate the radius ; make extreme motions at the wrists, and then of all the fingers, particularly the forefinger and thumb; stand on one leg and bend the other thigh up towards the abdomen ; whirl the thighs; bend and extend the knees ; stand a-tiptoe, and come down on the heel two or three times; walk rapidly; hop on both feet, [j] Immediately after these more violent motions, observe whether breathing is unduly humed, and explore the heart and lungs, [i] General surface. Look for ulcers, nodes, cica- trices, tumors, eruptions, varicose veins, &c., &c. [Z] Under the head of remarks note the applicant's apparent habits, as to sobriety, «fec., i&c. 5.
