TO THE CHAIRMAN AND COMMITTEE OF VISITORS OF THE NORTH WALES LUNATIC ASYLUM. lOeNTLEMEN, I The able report of the House Committee, already before the several flOourts of Quarter Sessions of the counties in union, has left little for our ;;notice respecting the general state and progress of the Asylum during the fpast year. We shall, therefore, confine our observations mainly to matters professional:— The admissions have been - - 67 Discharges—cured - - 30 Relieved. - - - 6 Deaths. - - 24 (which will show that the mortality has proportionably diminished, and <fche cures increased, as compared with the previous year. The deaths have, however, we grieve to be under the necessity of again remarking, been increased by the continuance of a practice which we have frequently had (reason to complain of in previous reports ; viz., the want of consideration f(to say the least of it), on the part of some parochial authorities, in send¬ ing patients into the Asylum in the last stage of existence, from disease and debility. One poor creature who was dying of organic disease of the heart, only survived her admission a week. This is a practice which cannot be too severely condemned, as cruel in ithe extreme towards the unhappy sufferers, and very unfair towards the Asylum. The Commissioners in Lunacy visited the Asylum in September last, and made the following entry in the Visitors’ Book. “North Wales Asylum, Denbigh, September 15th, 1854. “ Since the last visit of the Commissioners on the 24th of last October, 41 males and 34 females have been admitted; and within the same period 35 have been (discharged, of whom 22 were recovered. The deaths amounted to 24, prin¬ cipally from cerebral diseases in their various forms.
