    many men midwives may, and do acquit themfelvesj as decently as their practice will admit of, I will not deny : But, that it is an immodeft, an unneceffary, and a fhame- ful pradice to encourage, I will maintain ; and that there lives not a man of fenfe and fentiment, who loves his wife, that ever returned to her bed with that degree of fatisfadion and affedion, who has undergone a male midwife’s Touchy as fhe whofe perfon is, or he fuppoles to be facred to him, and him alone. Whenever I fee a married woman nice in fentiments, and delicate in her expreffions, and find fhe is attended by a male midwife ; I confider her a pretender to both: I look on her with contempt; and I confider that, if fhe had the authority ■ of cuftom to fupport it, fhe would permit rne, or anj other man to take the fame liberty. Hard as this, and my former treatife, may feem to fall on the ladies, thofe who are warned by it, and ap¬ prized of the confequences, will find the Author their friend, and their deliverer; a friend of more importance to their happinefs, than the unthinking multitude are aware of; and a deliverer from worfe evils than the pains ' of child-birth can produce.
