Description

An account of in the "Times", 8 December 1840, reported the capture of Chusan in China and how one man held up a board inscribed "save us for the sake of our wives and children". At a similar time the Whig ministers had resigned due to the division on the Jamaica bill, but their reinstatement, it was believed, owed something to Melbourne's influence over the Queen and her ladies at court
