    PREFACE. A SMALL Book on Nursing, wliicli I publislied a few years ago, has now for some time been out of print. In looking it over, with a view to its revision, I found so much that needed amplifying that I determined to write an entirely new book, which should enter much more fully than the old one into the details of Medical and Surgical Xursing, leaving the question of Monthly Nursing to be dealt with subsequently if thought desirable. I cannot better indicate the purpose with which this little work has been undertaken than in the words of my former preface:— It has been my aim, in the fol- lowing pages, to write a plain and practical text-book for nurses, defining the scope of their duties, and enter- ing suflB.ciently into detail to be helpful to them in their daily work. I ti'ust that those engaged in the training of nurses will find it useful as an auxiliary to their own personal teaching at the bedside, a mode of instruction which no text-book can ever supersede. There can be no doubt that rules ai*e more likely to be faithfully carried out when the principles on which they are founded are intelligently understood. I have there- fore endeavoured to give some account of the theory as well as the practice of nursings In the chapter on the antiseptic treatment, for example, will be found a brief statement of the principle on which that method of treat- ment is based, and, in that on the nursing of infectious
