    Bibliographical Note:—A very large number of editions of the Regimen Sanitatis Salernitanum have been published; the most ancient appears to have been a German translation of the date 1474. The earliest editions in Latin appeared in 1480, simultaneously, at Montpelier and Venice, with Commen¬ tary by ARNALDUS DE VILLA NOVA. In rapid succession during the remainder of the fifteenth century as many as fifteen editions are preserved; the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries each witnessed many new editions, each of which are mentioned with critical comments in the Bibli¬ ography compiled by Croke. The first English translation was published in 1530, by Thomas Paynel. A beautiful, clear imprint, in perfect preservation; handsome copper¬ plate emblematic frontispiece. A fine copy of the only Dutch translation of the Regimen Sanitatis Salernitanum. Included in the same volume is a reprint of Cornaro, de la Sobriete. In this book the Latin text and its French translation are presented upon opposite pages. The Commentary of Villa Nova is omitted. The translation into French verse is new and is the work of Meaux Saint-Marc. The book is illustrated by four vignettes. The preface contains a note to the effect that M. Baudry de Balzac reckons between 1474 and 1846 two hundred and forty editions of Regimen Sanitatis Salernitanum, including translations into French, German, English, Hibemo-Celtic, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Provencal, Bohe¬ mian, Hebrew, and even Persian. The number of manuscripts containing ' this poem rises beyond one hundred.
