    invention, -where a pad placed on the radial artery acts on an upright piece like a fiddle- how, the string of which passes over a small wheel, which in its turn moves a larger disc, on the edge of which is a pencil that, as the wheel moves, makes a magnified representa- tion of the arterial movements on a strip of paper moved by clockwork. This apparatus being all in the air, must be difficult of appli- cation and deficient in stability. L. Waldenburg* invented a pulse-clock, a complex machine which registers the move- ments of the artery on a dial, in appearance something like a clock-barometer. It does not give a graphic tracing of the pulse. Marey'sf sphygmograph consists of a long spring furnished with a pelotte or button, which is fastened over the radial artery. The movements of the spring are communicated to a long lever, furnished with a style or pen that traces the movements communicated to it * Die Messung des Pulses unci des Blutdrucks.
