    THE COMPARATIVE ANATOMY OF THE PLACENTA. Mr Peesident, Fellows of the College and Gentlemen, When the Council of the College elected me to fill the office of Lecturer on Anatomy and Physiology, I thought that the best mode in which I could show my sense of the honour conferred upon me was to select for consideration and discussion in the Lectures, a department of Anatomy which I had myself investigated. As the Anatomy of the Placenta in the several orders of placental mammals has engaged my attention for some years, and as during that period I have had the good fortune to acquire the gravid uteri of several rare mammals, the placentation of which had been little studied, I have chosen as the subject of my Lectures the Comparative Anatomy of the Placenta'; an organ, which, from its import- ance as the medium of connection between mother and foetus during intra-uterine life, is worthy of careful study by the Anatomist and Physiologist. In the course of my remarks I hope to submit to your notice several new facts and rela- tions of structure, and to throw some additional light upon previously recorded observations.
