    PREFACE TO THE PRESENT EDITION. t It would have been equally a matter of surprise as of regret, if in this age of progress Veterinary Medicine had not partici- pated in the general advancement that has taken place in the various arts and sciences. In the year 1831 the first edition of this work appeared, written by one eminently calculated to do full justice to the subject he had undertaken to elucidate, at the request of the “ Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge.” In 1843, a second edition was called for, and its arrange- ment was also entrusted to the same writer, who introduced so much new matter into its pages as almost to make it a new work. And now a third is demanded, the preparation of which has devolved on the present Editor, whose desire has been faithfully to maintain the high character of the publi- cation.
