These formulas were used to compute the predicted value of pulmonary function for groups with no silicosis but having the same average values for these characteristics as the metal mine work- ers with simple silicosis and with complicated silicosis. This was done by substituting in the formulas the average values for the char- acteristics of these groups as shown in table A.2.
