The subsoil is chiefl}^ sand, with chalk areas to the north and clay to the south, and with gravel and alluvial deposits in the river valley. There is a corresponding eliversity of scenery anc vegetation, downland merging into woodland and common. The towr forms the natural centre for several villages and hamlets, and is situatee on main road and railway line to London.
