About this work

Description

Common-place book containing extracts from the Bible, moral aphorisms, notes on natural history, etc.: with a few medical receipts: written mainly in English, but with a few quotations in Latin. Compiler's holograph MS. Illustrated with a few pen drawings of heraldic beasts, etc. A note on the verso of fol. 60 refers to various accidents which befell the writer in 1681, 1684, and 1685. On April 16th of the latest year, he broke several ribs in 'falling off Teddington Bridge'. On the recto of fol. 62 he notes the death of his father 'Edmond Woodward, son of Francis Woodward baptised the 9 of October 1587. Deceased the 11 of September 1665, and buried in the Cathedrall of Waterford in Ireland. My Mother deceased the 13 of November 1661 and buried [in the same place]'. Inside the lower cover is a note of a money loan dated 14 June 1692.

1 volume 84 ll. 8vo. 16 × 101/2 cm. Original calf binding with gold stamped centre ornament, slightly worn. Some leaves cut out, and 4 ll. mutilated.
