![Elnother Property. 607 QuR’an, ARABIC Manuscript, beautifully written in small and extremely neat Turkish Naskh on Turkish glazed paper sprinkled with gold, the first two pages very richly illuminated, headings of all surahs written in gold, all pages have plain double borders and rules of gold, and the ends of all verses are indicated by a bold gold spot; in the margins the divisions of the Quran are indicated, and passages omitted supplied in a neat hand by another scribe encircled with a gold line or design, a few leaves slightly defectwe and neatly repaired, ORIGINAL BINDING of black Turkish leather, the sides inlaid with thick gold with floral designs; doubled with red morocco, with a rich gold cartouche on each cover, and inlaid with gold leaf flowers, all wm fine bright condition, enclosed in a blue morocco box (Ain. by 24%n.). No-date or scribe, but Early XVIII Cent. [See ILLUSTRATION. | 608 Horse B. V. M. ap Usum Merensem [Metz] cum CaLENDARIO, MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, written in bold quthie characters in red and black, 12 lines to a page, 112 leaves, the Calendar in French in red and black, EACH MONTH WITH A FINELY EXECUTED MINIA- TURE OF THE OCCUPATION AND THE SIGN OF THE ZODIAC IN COLOURS ON A GROUND OF BURNISHED GOLD, each page of the calendar with a six-pointed gold star rayed in red with a human face wn the centre representing the sun (a very rare feature) ; following the Calendar two leaves WITH FULL-PAGE MINIATURES ON GOLD GROUNDS REPRESENTING : (1) Upper half, on the left: S. John the Baptist with Agnus Dei on a red plaque; on the right : a mitred saint holding a dragon by a cord and a tonsured saint in black habit with crozier lying on a hillside with flames shooting up round him (? St. Clement and St. Arnoul of Metz). Lower half: St. George on horseback slaying the dragon, before him a knight wn armour kneeling, on his surcoat a shield, gules, an eagle displayed or (doubtless representing the patron for whom the manuscript was written). (2) Upper half: Bishop with mitre and cromer, S. Agnes with lamb, 8S. Denis with his severed head in his hands. Lower half: Stoning of S. Stephen. The Hours of the Virgin are decorated with SEVEN BEAUTIFULLY PAINTED MINIATURES ON GROUNDS OF BURNISHED GOLD (for subjects see below) AND SEVEN VERY FINE LARGE HISTORIATED INITIALS WITH BEAUTIFUL THREE-QUARTER BORDERS of bar design with foliate decoration introducing angels, hares, hounds, birds, etc. numerous other initials i gold and colours, two or three leaves of the calendar somewhat stamed, eight leaves affected by ink corrosion making portions of the text defective,](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b31640667_0100.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
