![THE FOOD OF MA.N. Buck-wlieat (Polygonum ftigopyrum). the height of about thirty inches. At almost CTery joint of the stalk, lateral branches shoot out, which are terminated by purplish flowers, and these are succeeded by small triangular-shaped seeds, which arc of a brownish- black colour on the outside, and M'hitc within. This grain is usually sown in May or June, and is of such ra|)id growth that it generally ri])cns its seeds within about one hundred days from the time of sowing. It will thrive in any' soil, even in those which contain little else than sand. The largest increase is, however, ob- tained from diy ground, which has been thoroughly' ])loughed and ])ulveri7.ed ; and in such circumstances as mueii as fifty or sixty bushels have been reai)cd from an acre on which oidy one bushel of seed has been be- stowed.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b22029710_0126.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
