    It will be here proper to oblerve, that fome in- accuracy has arifen in the hiftory of the Mortimer family, from confounding with Edmund Morti- mer, Earl of March and heir to the crown, another Edmund Mortimer, who was a fecond or younger fon of Philippa,* and confequently the uncle of the former ; and it is ftill difficult to afcer- tain with precifion which of thefe two perfons was the real actor in fome of thofe tranfactions, in ‘which both the one and the other are by different writers fuppofed to have been engaged. . From a careful examination, however, of thefe tranfactions, I am very fully perfuaded that Ed- mund Mortimer, the uncle of the Earl of March, (and not, as has been erroneouily fuppofed, the Earl of March himfelf) was taken prifoner by * Dugdale’s Baronage, vol. 1. p. 138. + As by Shakfpeare (in his Henry IV. and in the latter part of the {cene above quoted), and alfo by Cam- den (Radnorfhire) and Speed, x Glendower
