    not be kept. Your report, therefore, on its characters must be founded on your own opinion; and I would like you to be able to form an opinion worth reporting. Cough.—A cough is a sudden expiration forced through the upper end of the windpipe from a sense of somethino- to be dislodo-ed there. It may only be a sense of something, or there may really be something. This fact furnishes us with' a convenient and common division of coughs into dry and moist. 1. A dry cough. This is the form which is often called a hard cough, and sometimes a tickling cough. There is nothing about the windpipe to be brought up; the irritation is in the nerves of the part, and may be brought to them from the most distant parts of the lungs, or even beyond them. You must, therefore, be careful to note the cough whatever disease the patient is supposed to suffer from. 2. A moist cough. Often termed a soft cough. It is a cough with expectoration; the object being to expel the undue secretion from the windpipe or from the bronchial tubes. Besides these characters you will note also its
