    [.24 I. that the matter of a gonorrhcea abforbed and carried into the fyftem, may gene- rate all the fymptoms of a confirmed lues venerea. Inorder for it to do this, how- ever, itis perhaps neceflary (though this . is by no means certain) that it fhould be taken up from an ulcerated furface ; and there are many practitioners, of no incon- fiderable eminence, who deny that any fuch ulceration is ever produced in the urethra by a gonorrheea. ‘They contend ‘that the increafed fecretion in thefe cafes is exactly fimilar to what happens in the catarrh; but the comparifon will by no means hold good; for in the latter the whole membrane of the nofe is equally irritated, whereas in the gonorrhea only - particular parts of the urethra feem to be affected.
