    n succeeds to that opposite condition of that organ, which in subsequent pages I term torpor of the cranial brain. An Erethismal condition of the cranial brain may manifest itself even from the first moment of the child’s existence; or it may be induced at any subsequent period by any of the causes which have just been enumerated. In some cases, very mild shades of this state of the brain may be present, while in other cases, there may be an assemblage of all those symptoms which 1 have described as characteristic of each form of the erethismal condition. In the milder forms of this affection, and in the early stage of it, the only symptoms which it produces, may be, great wakefulness, great sensibility to slight impressions, with restlessness and animation in a high degree; and, as these symptoms are ge* nerally hailed by nurses as proofs of the health and vigour of a child, it frequently happens, that the presence of this affection is over-looked.
