    PREFACE. To practice any particular branch of the medical profefsion, with fuccefs, requires a general knowledge of the whole fcieilce; at the fame time, it must be acknowledg- ed, that if, from any peculiar coincidence of circumstances, a person’s attention is . • more immediately directed to one clafs of diseases, he acquires a greater power of discrimination, and, from the mind dwelling much on one fubject, he fre- quently obtains new ideas, and ftrikes out into a new and preferable mode of practice.
