    In the five years that have passed since the fourth edition of this book was prepared, the development of interest and investigation in the chemical problems of biology and medicine has been greater, at least as evidenced by volume of publication, than in any previous five year period. To consider exhaustively all these contributions would require a work of several volumes, and would be a comparatively easy task. Believing that the chief claim for consideration this book has had in the past has depended on its containing a reasonably complete resume of our knowledge of the topics covered within a single volume of moderate size, the same policy of compression has again been followed. In order to include as far as possible what has seemed most essential without unduly increasing the bulk of the material, much of the older work has been eliminated, and to a very large extent the entire book has been rewritten. Few pages of the previous edition remain unchanged, and numerous sections are entirely new. Much of the preliminary discussion of the principles of biological and physical chemistry of the introductory chapter of former editions has been omitted, in the belief that these principles are now generally known by the modern physician and medical student, which was far from the case when the first edition was prepared eighteen years ago. The chapters on immunity have been rearranged in a more logical way, and the number of chapters increased by two without a corresponding increase in volume. In general, however, the scope and character of the book remains unchanged. The author recognizes fully that it would be easily possible to report the existing state of knowledge on the topics covered in “Chemical Pathology” in a much briefer space, if only completely estab- lished evidence were included. With the object of serving as a guide to investigators, and with the hope of stimulating further investigations, much more than this minimal amount of existing evidence is included. As with all previous editions, my indebtedness must be acknowledged to numerous colleagues who have kindly read over the sections of this book which most closely concern their own fields, and especially to the members of my Department and of the Otho S. A. Sprague Memorial Institute, who have made many useful suggestions. The chapter on Diabetes is largely contributed by Dr. R. T.
